I am a 1985 graduate of Durfee High School and studied television production under Mr. John Gorman. While we were not called “FRED-TV” at the time, we did produce content for broadcast over the local cable network. If memory serves me correctly, it was during my junior-year (1984) that the TV studio was dedicated to Morton (Dean) Dubitsky. We produced some really neat things but due to the size and cost of the equipment, we were limited in the amount and types of “out of studio” content we could do.

It was exciting when we able to get some new equipment – I remember us getting the Hitachi FP-10 (don’t ask how I remember that) – it was so “small” compared to the studio cameras, better picture, black-balance, white-balance, etc

Some of my favorite memories involved being the first “remote” cameraman to provide sideline footage at football games; I occasionally went into the stands, mixed with the band and cheerleaders. But I also provided a behind-the-scenes view of Senior Follies. None of our material was ever broadcast live, so there was a lot of editing to be done, but I had a great time for three years doing that.

I built some of my greatest friendships with my TV classmates. It is something that I still talk about with my children and other high school students in my area. They are amazed that I attended a high school with a TV studio.

Congratulations to you and your students. I noticed that you will be broadcasting the Durfee/New Bedford Thanksgiving Day game – I will tune-in. I have also sent your web address to my brother (Class of 1981) who is serving our country in Kyrgyzstan.
